History

Since 2007, a group of dedicated individuals has put together an Earth Day event for the Pikes Peak region. The first few years were at Palmer High school, then it moved to Colorado College, and in 2011 year the event was held at Doherty Middle School. These 1-day events featured vendor booths, presentations, art, music, food, animals, and were attended by hundreds of citizens. However, there were often many events happening on the same day, the event was repetitive and not really action-oriented, so the Earth Day Steering Committee decided that a change was needed to help move the regional sustainability forward…

A New Direction

After much discussion, the Steering Committee decided instead of competing with other Earth Day events we would help other organizations promote their events throughout the entire month of April: Earth Month. Earth Day is more than just a day. It is something that has spread to every day of our lives and April has become a month where we can celebrate our daily endeavors toward sustainability through local actions. April is also a great time to reach out to those who may not be aware of the benefits of making smart choices about the earth and its resources, to share our collective knowledge, and increase our connection with our community and the earth.

Due to the changing opportunities and needs of the region, the Pikes Peak Earth Day group has decided to focus our efforts on building unity between all of us by producing the first regional Earth Month Insert in the Independent Newspaper, hosting an Earth Month Kickoff Party on April 1st to launch the month of activities, and offering an Earth Day Grant that will expand our mission beyond the month.

You can find more information about all of our initiatives on this site and if you have any questions, please contact Allison Plute at (719) 650-7474 or send e-mail to info@pikespeakearthday.org.

The Pikes Peak Earth Day group is a partnership of local business, government, and nonprofit organizations that are committed to enhancing awareness and inspiring personal and community action toward a sustainable future.
